Uttarakhand: Kali River Rafting Expedition

Experience the powerful Kali River on a full-length whitewater rafting adventure through the remote Kumaon region of Uttarakhand. Also known as the Kali-Sharda in its downstream section, the river forms part of the natural India–Nepal border and passes through forested hills, rocky riverbanks, river beaches and relatively untouched Himalayan landscapes. The experience is designed for travellers looking for a longer and more adventurous rafting session than the standard short rafting products.

The activity begins at the designated Kali River rafting launch point, where participants meet the professional rafting crew and complete registration, equipment checks and a detailed safety briefing. After receiving helmets, life jackets and paddles, participants enter the river and begin the approximately six-hour rafting journey.

The route combines flowing sections with exciting whitewater rapids. The Kali/Sharda around Tanakpur is known for high water volume and mostly Class III-level rapids, although the exact difficulty varies with the selected section and seasonal river conditions. Participants paddle under the instructions of an experienced river guide while navigating rapids, waves and calmer stretches.

Along the way, the journey offers views of dense vegetation, Himalayan foothills, remote riverbanks and the distinctive landscape around the India–Nepal border. Short rest breaks may be taken at suitable riverbank locations. The experience ends at the designated downstream take-out point after approximately six hours on the river.
