Meghalaya: Kongthong Organic Honey Experience with Transfers

  • Kongthong
  • • Food & Culinary Experiences
  • • Duration 4 hour

Description

Discover Kongthong's traditional honey culture through a guided village experience focused on local beekeeping, honey harvesting practices and rural Khasi life.

Meghalaya Tourism specifically documents Kongthong's traditional honey production. Around 40–50 households in the village practise beekeeping, using traditional wooden hives and inherited harvesting methods. The tourism department also notes that honey is harvested twice a year, with the first harvest generally taking place from late November to January and another harvest during March and April.

The experience gives guests an opportunity to meet local beekeepers, learn how traditional hives are maintained, understand the relationship between farming and pollination, and taste locally produced honey when available. Guests can also explore the surrounding village landscape and learn about Kongthong's famous cultural identity as the Whistling Village.

This is a community-based rural experience rather than a commercial honey-factory tour. Actual hive observation or honey extraction is subject to the local beekeeper's availability and seasonal activity.
