Kenya: Samburu Special Five Wildlife Safari with Transfers

  • Kenya
  • • Wildlife & Nature
  • • Duration 12 hour

Description

Discover the remarkable wildlife of northern Kenya on a specialist Samburu Special Five Wildlife Safari. Unlike a conventional Big Five safari, this experience focuses on five distinctive northern Kenya species that make Samburu one of the country’s most interesting wildlife destinations: Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, Beisa oryx and Somali ostrich. Each species has adapted to the region’s dry, semi-arid environment and occupies different habitats, making the search itself an important part of the safari.

Your safari begins with an early departure from your lodge or selected pickup point. After entering Samburu National Reserve, your professional safari guide begins a slow wildlife search across open plains, acacia woodland, scrubland and areas surrounding the Ewaso Ng’iro River. The river is an important wildlife area, particularly during dry periods, and may provide opportunities to see elephants, buffaloes, hippos and other wildlife alongside the Special Five.

The morning drive concentrates on cooler hours when wildlife activity is often stronger. Your guide looks for the narrow-striped Grevy’s zebra, geometric-patterned reticulated giraffe, upright-feeding gerenuk, long-horned Beisa oryx and distinctive Somali ostrich.

After lunch, continue with an afternoon game drive through different habitats rather than simply repeating the same route. Additional sightings may include lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, buffaloes, plains zebra, antelopes and numerous dry-country birds.

The experience is ideal for wildlife photographers, first-time safari travelers and visitors who want to explore Samburu’s unique northern wildlife identity, rather than focusing only on the traditional Big Five.
