Kenya: Marafa Canyon Sunset Tour with Transfers

  • Kenya
  • • Romantic Experiences
  • • Duration 6 hour

Description

Discover the striking sandstone formations of Marafa Canyon on a guided sunset excursion from Malindi, Watamu or Mambrui. Locally known as Nyari and widely called Hell’s Kitchen, this natural landscape features deep gullies, narrow passages and colourful sandstone formations shaped by erosion over many years.

Travel inland through the coastal countryside, passing villages, farmland and baobab trees before reaching Marafa. On arrival, meet a local guide who will introduce you to the canyon’s geological features and local cultural stories. Walk along the canyon rim before descending into the gorge, where winding paths pass between sandstone walls and unusual rock formations. The descent and return involve uneven, sandy terrain, so comfortable walking shoes are essential.

As the afternoon progresses, the changing sunlight brings out shades of red, orange, pink, white and gold in the sandstone. Enjoy time to explore the canyon and take photographs before finding a suitable viewpoint to watch the sunset.

The experience also offers an opportunity to learn about the local Giriama community and the stories associated with Nyari. The tour is suitable for visitors interested in geology, photography, cultural interpretation and outdoor exploration. The return journey takes place after sunset, with hotel drop-off included in selected packages.
