Assam: Jorhat Colonial Tea Heritage Walk with Transfers

  • Jorhat
  • • Walking Experience
  • • Duration 4 hour

Description

Explore Jorhat's distinctive colonial tea heritage through a guided journey connecting the city's historic sporting institutions, tea-research legacy and surviving colonial-era landscapes.

Jorhat became an important centre of Assam's tea industry during the expansion of commercial tea cultivation. The city's heritage is particularly connected with the Jorhat Gymkhana Club, established in 1876 by D. Slimmon, and Tocklai Tea Research Institute, established as Tocklai Experimental Station in 1911.

The experience begins with the colonial sporting heritage of the Jorhat Gymkhana Club and continues towards Tocklai, where guests learn about the scientific development of Assam tea. Tocklai is recognised by Assam Tourism and the Jorhat district administration as the world's oldest and largest tea research institute of its kind.

The walk focuses on tea history, colonial architecture, plantation culture, scientific research and the transformation of Jorhat from a tea-planter centre into a modern tea city.
